WHAT:

The Fine Art of Fiber
Karen Stockwell's scarves will be featured at this intriguing exhibit. Fiber Art is a rather recent term, appearing after WWII, when curators recognized the aesthetic of otherwise utilitarian objects. In the 1950s artists began using fibers to make non-functional pieces of work and in the '60s and '70s an international revolution in fiber art emerged. Fibers can be from plants or animals, made into contemporary or traditional designs.

This exhibit will include natural or synthetic fibers. It may include surface design on fabric, weavings, basketry, handmade or commercial paper, threads or yarns, macrame, crochet, knitting, felting, rug hooking, quilts, lace, and many more techniques in the form of wall art, sculpture, installation, fashion… So many possibilities!.

Karen Stockwell will read from her new book of poetry, Everyday Mysteries, and have copies available for sale and signing. What are “everyday mysteries”? In the context of this volume they are the things we all ponder: the nature of love, making sense of a violent world, how to nurture ourselves and our families. In solving the large and small mysteries we encounter every day, we are able to discover ourselves and the meaning of our lives. Se will also present her marbled paper and fabric, made into prints, cards, and scarves, which will be for sale in the gift shop. Karen Stockwell is the author of two novels and a poetry chapbook. She was a semi-finalist in the 2017 Soon To Be Famous Illinois Author Contest. She has an extensive background in the arts including a M.A. in Art History.
